Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides social security benefits to adults and children with limited income and financial resources who are either over 65 years of age, disabled or blind. In order to be eligible for SSI benefits based on disability an individual must have a medically determinable mental or physical impairment that meets specific criteria.

Unlike SSDI disability benefits, SSI benefits are not based on an individuals payment into the Social Security system. In contrast, SSI benefits are paid out based need and are often combined with other federal assistance programs. Also unlike SSDI disability benefits, SSI benefits are not paid to dependents or other family members of the claimant.

The amount of benefits paid will depend on an individuals resources and the other individuals in his or her household. For the purposes of determining eligibility SSI the Social Security Administration looks at most forms of income. The calculation includes wages, Social Security benefits and pensions. For children, a portion of the parents’ income is used. For married persons, part of the spouses income will be included in the income calculation. The income calculation does not,however, include the following:

The first $20 a month of most income you receive;

The first $65 a month you earn from working and half the amount over $65;

Food stamps;

Shelter you get from private nonprofit organizations; and

Most home energy assistance.

You can receive some income and still receive SSI benefits. The amount you can earn while continuing to receive SSI benefits changes over time and is dependent on where you live.
